Vale Harry Quick

A tribute to Harry Quick

Dear Harry, Cobber,

Harry, I didn’t get to say goodbye,
My friend, perhaps it was for the best!
Your wish was not to suffer when told the news
That cancer had returned, in your chest.

You had a traumatic time, following
The loss of a thumb, then your right hand,
Yet, you maintained your great sense of humour,
In spite of the pain, you did withstand.

Pastoral care was your forte, - those in need;
A neighbour, electors with issues,
Your fellow colleagues in Sippers Group,
Were all cared for and supported by you.

I appreciated the hours you spent
Beside my hospital bed, your support,
The phone calls checking on me once a week,
As I faced the challenges illness brought.

Your sincerity was never questioned,
Your follow through much appreciated,
Your principles were upheld at all times
“Crossing the Floor” was appropriate.

You taught in schools across Tasmania,
Elected five terms to Parliament,
Elected to Glenorchy City Council,
Community support was paramount!

You fully embraced the Headstone Project
Honouring those who fought World War 1.
To Adelaide, a headstone to unveil,
A last undertaking, for now your work is done.

Your unifying presence will be missed,
Especially by your Sipper friends.
Travel safely, Harry, though we miss you,
The pain, the uncertainty, is at an end.
