Vale Bevis Ross
We’d been friends for nigh on Seventy Years,
’E’ Class back in ’56, Launceston Tech.,
Me from Underwood, You from Bracknell,
From there our lives would often intersect.
Launceston Teachers College in ‘61
Out teaching as nineteen-year-olds in ’63.
Principals of many schools across the state,
Forty years in education, an eternity.
In nineteen seventy-five you and Jan
Bought Economy House in Richmond
And set about restoring house and garden
Of which, rightly so, you grew proud and fond.
You were active in the Richmond community,
Always ready to share your knowledge.
You were a key in the restoration
And saving of the Miller’s Cottage,
I’m so glad we reconnected this year
After the Sippers’ Coffee winter lunch,
You proudly showed Joy and I your home,
The years of work you’d done, pleased as Punch!
I shall miss my contact with you, Bevis,
Your sense of humour, your humility.
Travel safely my friend of many years
As you venture into eternity.
