The Jordan River Trail

The Jordan River Trail
(Pontville to Brighton, Tasmania)

Ducks queuing in pairs to cross the trail
Then sliding down the embankment into
The pond on my side. Dabbling, up tails
All among the reeds, at their rendezvous.

Swallows swooping above the river, feeding
On insects I can’t see. Turbo chooks
on the bank, easily outrunning
Our scooters whilst casting sideways looks.

Willow faggots stretching skywards, seeking
Their share of the weak, winter sun,
Whilst underneath the stream is running
From pool to pool as it’s always done.

Flood debris trapped in riverside trees,
Showed the height of a recent flood.
Cormorants, no longer hungry,
Perch, while below the stream does scud.

A wonderful time to be running free,
My friends, the supascootateers, and me.
