Oh to Sail Again!

Oh to sail again across the bay,
To trim the sails, get underway,
Hear the whisper of the water
‘Neath the forefoot, waves on the quarter,
Skimming along in a gentle breeze.
Ah, but memories are such a tease!

It’s the time of the equinox,
Time for something unorthodox,
Making use of these hurrying winds,
Particularly fierce tailwinds,
Feel the force on my back once more,
But on the safety of the shore!

I remember, a day long past,
A chaffbag sail on a ti-tree mast,
Sailing out of Whitemark, down the road
My brother and me as we rode,
In a freshening westerly wind,
Our billy cart -
But that was way back when . . .

I could repeat my childhood fame,
Adapt my scooter to do the same.
With a sail set on a lofty mast,
Before the wind sailing fast,
I’d hurtle down a nearby lane,
Reliving my childhood once again!
