Thirteen Years and Counting

Thirteen years and counting

September 2025

The wind blows outside today,
Ruffling leaves upon its way,
Creating lines across the bay
Where wind and wave meet to play.
The mountain looks tall and grey,
The squalls have just gone away.
I watch this view every day
Enjoying all that’s on display.

September 2012, back then . . .

I was given twelve months to live,
The blood cancer – aggressive,
Stem cell transplant - massive,
Survival - imperative,
Cancers became submissive
The outcome positive,
Thirteen years remissive,
A continuing narrative.

Today . . .

As I sit in pensive thought
About illness I have fought,
All the times when quite distraught,
Joy and family gave support,
Helped me through the time I’d bought,
Each day special to be sought,
Enjoyed and lived, as it ought,
With care and love key cohorts.

Footnote:
(In 2011 I was diagnosed with Waldenstroms Macroglobulinaemia and Amyloidosis L – both rare. 12 months chemotherapy did not halt these cancers. I was given 12-18 months to live. In September 2012, 13 years ago, it was decided to give me a bone marrow transplant using my own stem cells collected before stronger chemotherapy was administered. Between the blood cancers and the chemotherapy my body and general health have been greatly compromised.)
